Oktoberfest in Munich

Oktoberfest is touted as the world’s largest Volksfest (beer festival and travelling funfair), held annually in Munich, Bavaria, and Germany. Spanning a period of 16 days from from late September to the first weekend in October with more than 6 million people from around the world attending the event every year, it is definitely a popular festival in the world. The festival began in 1810 in the honour of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage and since then the festival has been celebrated every year. It has got bigger and better and is mostly about beer, however, the Oktoberfest Costume and Riflemen’s Parade is a must see.

Carnival of Venice, Italy

Carnival of Venice is an annual event held in Venice, Italy and dates back over 900 years. Famous for its elaborate masks the carnival ends with the Christian celebration of Lent, forty days before Easter. Venice is at its beautiful best with people in festive spririt wering beautiful maska and having fun. There are bands, jugglers and entertainters everywhere and the canals are full of colourful boats. The nights are also glamourous with parties and masked balls.

Pingxi Lantern Festival in Taiwan, China

Popular belief is that Pingxi Lantern Festival in Taiwan began during the Three Kingdoms period (Ad 220-265) by Zhuge Liang. There are thousands of lanterns released in the sky as a prayer for the coming year and to seek blessings from the ancestors. It is believed that the lanterns rise up to the ancestors to report that all was well and also to seek guidance and pray for happiness for people. People also say that it was originally celebrated to ward off evil and disease from the town.

Well, this is the biggest party on road, if I may say so. Held 40 days before Easter just before Lent begins it is considered to be the biggest carnival in the world with 2 million people per day enjoying the parades. The festival has its beginnings in 1823 and is continuing with much fanfare ever since. Preparations for the event begin months in advance and you can expect spectacular parades out together by city’s samba schools along with street parties, live Brazilian music and more.

The White Nights Festival in St Petersburg, Russia

Celebrated in St. Ptersburg, Russia The White Nights Festival is an annual international arts festival during the season of the midnight sun. Organised by St. Petersbug City Administration, the festival consists of series of classical ballet, opera and music events both from Russian and international artists. The popular events which take place during the long festival are the Scarlet Sails and the carinvals.
